When Indian athletes step onto global podiums, medals in hand, few remember the architects behind their success. Dr. C. Ajithkumar — International Athletic Coach, Director of Sports, and Associate Professor — is one such architect, driven by a singular mission:

“To create Olympic medalists for our nation.”

Roots of Dedication

Born in Amarapuram, Kottayam, Kerala, to late P. K. Chellappan Sir and Janamma Teacher, Ajithkumar’s journey began in a small village filled with dreams bigger than its size. His first lessons in athletics came from Merikutty Teacher, who instilled discipline and a love for sport. Later, P. V. Velsi Sir nurtured his competitive spirit at the university level, shaping him into a skilled and determined athlete.

The Amara village community and the National Arts and Sports Club were his first cheerleaders, offering support that helped him win the Best Athlete Award from the Government of Kerala in 1991 — a recognition that set the stage for his lifelong mission: coaching champions.

Mentorship That Forged a Vision

Ajithkumar’s journey as a coach was inspired by two pivotal mentors:

  • Dr. Mohan Alva, Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, who provided a platform to shape athletes.

  • Sri P. T. Ouseph Sir, mentor to legendary sprinter P. T. Usha, whose guidance strengthened Ajithkumar’s technical and tactical expertise.

Their influence transformed him from an athlete into a visionary coach capable of producing champions on the global stage.

Leadership Across Institutions

Today, Ajithkumar is a multifaceted leader, seamlessly combining coaching, academics, and sports administration:

  • Director of Sports, SBSU

  • Associate Professor, Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, Arunachal Pradesh

  • Athletic Coach, Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri

  • Chief Project Director, HRDS INDIA Sports Academy

Through these roles, he integrates scientific training, biomechanics, and mental conditioning, ensuring athletes are ready for international competition.

Milestones That Redefined Indian Athletics

Dr. Ajithkumar’s coaching journey has been groundbreaking:

  • In 2023, he became the first Indian coach to produce a World University Games medalist in long jump when Bhavani Yadav Bhagavathi achieved 6.42m to win bronze in Chengdu, China.

  • Recipient of the Best Coach Award by Kerala State Athletics Association (2017).

  • Honored again with the Best Coach Award by Alva’s Education Foundation (2023).

  • Credited for introducing scientific, psychological, and biomechanical methods into Indian athletics coaching.

Champions Who Carry His Legacy

The athletes he has mentored are a testament to his philosophy and vision:

  • Bhavani Yadav Bhagavathi – World University Games bronze medalist (long jump).

  • Nayana James – Asian gold medalist, ranked No. 1 in Asia (PB: 6.55m).

  • Sneha – Asian silver medalist, 100m sprint (PB: 11.41s).

  • Renga K – World Police Games record holder, 100m (11.42s).

  • Jijin Vijayan – National 100m record holder (PB: 10.50s).

  • Stalin Jose – Decathlete, 9th place at World University Games.

  • Ali Ansari – Asian Youth silver medalist, now a coach.

  • Rajesh Postel – Asian Junior silver medalist.

Each athlete reflects his blend of talent identification, scientific training, and psychological resilience, creating champions who inspire the nation.

Philosophy That Shapes Winners

Ajithkumar believes that greatness is cultivated, not accidental. His coaching philosophy emphasizes:

  • Spotting and nurturing grassroots talent.

  • Leveraging biomechanics, strength, and speed training.

  • Building mental resilience to handle global competition.

  • Focusing on long-term athlete development, not short-term gains.

He often says, “Talent alone does not create champions; discipline, science, and perseverance do.”

Beyond the Track

Away from coaching, Ajithkumar draws inspiration from his family. His wife, Reena K. K., serves as a Section Officer in the Kerala Government Secretariat, while daughters Aleena Ajith and Ananya Ajith motivate him daily.

From his home in Thiruvananthapuram, he balances a demanding professional life with strong family values, proving that true success is rooted in both dedication and support.

Toward Olympic Dreams

From a small village in Kerala to shaping India’s top athletes, Dr. C. Ajithkumar’s journey is a story of vision, perseverance, and unwavering belief in talent.

His message to every athlete is clear:

“India has the talent. With the right guidance, we will conquer the world of athletics.”

Dr. Ajithkumar is not just a coach — he is India’s visionary, preparing the champions who will carry the nation’s flag to Olympic glory.
